Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway Diesel Gala – 9 & 10 July

Many people will already be aware of the troubles faced by the GWSR this year with the second bank slip at Chicken Curve, outside Winchcombe station. Because of this, the line is effectively split into two sections with the Toddington end services being handled by some Class 117 DMU’s and the north section (now open to Cheltenham Racecourse again) is normally worked by steam locos.

On 9th & 10th July, the diesel gala will take place. It is likely to be the only one this year so it is vital that it is a success. All available locos from the home fleet will be rostered to work services so that mean:

South Section: D8137 and E6036
The 20 and the newly repainted 73 will be operating between WInchcombe and Cheltenham Racecourse, This will be the 73’s first public outing in it’s coat of BR Blue and the first time it has worked a passenger train in quite a while.

North Section: 1693, 47376, 37215 and 37324
These locos will be operating, top and tail, between Hailes (just short of Chicken Curve) and the recently extended section to Laverton, passing over the impressive Stanway viaduct. In addition to the loco-hauled services the DMU will be out, working opposite the loco-hauled set thus providing a very intensive service..

The Sunday will see a bus rally held at Toddington and the bus link on that day between Toddington and Winchcombe will be operated using heritage buses. All of this is included in the price of a rover ticket.

Timetables and more information can be found on the GWSR website:
