Including a Polo-Shirt to mark the 50th anniversary!

News from the owner of 55022 and D9016: Martin Walker

As previously advised, 2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the iconic English Electric Type 5 ‘Deltic’ locomotives and a number of special events are being held to celebrate the Golden Anniversary. It was decided that it would be a great shame for ‘Gordon Highlander’ to be out of traffic for these momentous occasions and just before Christmas work began on assessing the problems with Power Unit 406. This unit was overhauled at Paxman’s works in Colchester for Porterbrook Leasing and Deltic 9000 Locomotives, following damage incurred as a result of extinguishing an exhaust fire at Loughborough on 3rd December 1999. After in-situ repairs and testing this engine was started for the first time in around 7 years on Tuesday 4th January and ran under its own power shunting locos around the East Lancashire Railway’s Baron Street sidings two days later. Saturday 15th January, then saw both ‘Royal Scots Grey’ and ‘Gordon Highlander’ work the E.L.R.’s diesel diagram in a variety of top and tailed and tandem formats and another great day was enjoyed by the many visitors. Power Unit 406 has since been operated on numerous occasions and no signs of coolant contamination in to the engine lubricating oil have been evident in thorough inspections. As a result, we are of course clearly delighted and are happy to report that D9016 is now part of the E.L.R.’s operational diesel fleet, until such time as the loco is withdrawn from traffic for some significant bodywork repairs.

55 022 Railtours

The main part of the three days Spitfire Railtour along the Classes’ original East Coast Mainline stamping ground, running between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh and return on Saturday 5th March is now completely sold out. Arrangements have been made with the curator of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards regimental museum to have the loco’s original nameplate, crest and other railwayana on display at the museum inside Edinburgh Castle on this day. A regimental association piper should also be at Edinburgh Waverly to welcome the train. Seats remain for the Preston to London Euston on Friday 4th and Return on Sunday the 6th of March; these can be booked directly with Spitfire Railtours either through or by phone on 0870-879-3675. We’d like to thank all who have booked in advance and look forward very much to this momentous occasion.
Plans are progressing for other Railtours throughout 2011, at this stage, firm arrangements are now in place for 55 022 to haul a special SRPS Railtours train from Linlithgow, Edinburgh and other Fife stations venturing to the Far North towns of Wick and Thurso, passing through some of Scotland’s most breath taking scenery. Departing late Friday evening, for an overnight run north on 17th June, travelling back southbound the following day. Being close to the longest daylight day of the year, there should be plenty of great photographic opportunities. We hope to announce further details of various other railtours soon.
